Who: Martin Freeman
Where: Empire Awards 2018, London
We have little time for the Vodafone ads, but Martin Freeman’s wardrobe has our full attention of late. By switching the standard monochrome jacket for a check, everyone’s favourite Hobbit adds some much-needed interest – and with it, memorability – to standard red carpet fare. The future is exciting indeed.
Who: Tom Glynn-Carney
Where: Empire Awards 2018, London
Dunkirk was one of 2017’s most stylish films, and on the fashion front line, Tom Glynn-Carney has continued to lead the charge. This time, the 23-year-old conquered smart-casual territory, switching a shirt for a T-shirt, and chiming a stealthy neck scarf with pink kicks below. Nice work, private.
Who: Toby Huntington-Whiteley
Where: Ready Player One Premiere, London
Few people could outshine Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, but her brother Toby is perhaps one of them (though we admire them for very different reasons). The Burberry frontman dispelled an old style diktat, melding various shades of black and blue for a look that’s classic and flattering. Simply repeat with razor-sharp fits and a quality roll neck.
Who: Edgar Ramirez
Where: American Crime Story FCA Event, Los Angeles
On-screen, Edgar Ramirez is an uncanny stand-in for Gianni Versace. Off it, the Spanish actor eschewed the silk shirts and tango tan for a look less divisive. His corduroy two-piece taps the seventies revival but stayed in this century thanks to a geometric knit.
Who: Jay Pharoah
Where: New York City
Saturday Night Live grad Jay Pharoah has the perfect look for your actual Saturday night. Leather trims upgrade the varsity jacket to Senior material, making this preppy go-to a mature accompaniment to wardrobe staples elsewhere. A+ stuff.
Who: Scott Eastwood
Where: New York City
Despite a leading role in this year’s mechathon Pacific Rim: Uprising, Scott Eastwood left the metal-plated bodysuit well alone. Instead, we got a symphony of blues that scored tonal points, and made smart on a simple casual zip-up jacket.
Who: Kevin Hart
Where: Los Angeles
Bling – a word that makes many guys recoil in horror – can be done well. Just take Kevin Hart. America’s funny man dressed down a suit with a T-shirt, yet upgraded the look with a glint here and there: the rose gold Rolex and a simple insect brooch. Bling it on.
Who: Jeff Goldblum
Where: Isle Of Dogs Special Screening, New York City
Cue Jurassic Park theme tune because style has found a way again. Menswear sleeper hit Geoff Goldblum layered three unconventional pieces, yet used a monochrome palette to tie his look together. Factor in the clever use of texture too, and here’s proof that this 65-year-old ain’t no dinosaur.
Who: Jesse Metcalfe
Where: Fendi x Flaunt Launch Party, Los Angeles
Though best known for playing a gardener that banged Desperate Housewives, Jesse Metcalfe has stayed front of mind. And for that, we can thank looks like this: an oversized checked overcoat that covers an all-black canvas below (and any tell-tale grass stains).
Who: Robbie Rogers
Where: Fendi x Flaunt Launch Party, Los Angeles
Former LA Galaxy winger Robbie Rogers just left the stratosphere. By opting for pattern mixing – one of the trickier moves in the book – the California native took a risk, and pulled it off with a narrow palette and a colour-pop polo to finish. There’s a new starman in town.
